This is a question I hear all the time. Why would a child who has had no broken bones, and only the occasional cold and allergies need adjusting? Is it safe to get kids adjusted?

Everyone has gone through multiple traumas by the time they are 2, or even 1 year old. The first is birth. Today, many babies are delivered via C-section and vacuum, and the mothers are induced so that the process is hurried along. Many times during a C-section, the incision is too small for the newborn to pass through. This means that an extreme amount of force is used to pull the infant out, most commonly by the head and neck. Think about what this may do to the spinal cord and nerves connected. Ouch! Why not have them checked?

Second, is learning to sit up, roll over, and crawl. In order for these events to occur, the infant must be able to have the appropriate strength in his/her spinal musculature, arms, and legs. With a nervous system that is not functioning at 100%, these seemingly simple tasks take extra amounts of energy to accomplish. Why not have them checked?

Third, is standing, walking and running. These are huge milestones, and also can do the most damage. Think about how many times a day your child stands, only to fall directly on his/her bottom. Or how about all those low coffee tables? Those are just the right height for a new walker to cruise into. But a little bruise on the head wouldn't do much damage to the spinal column right? Wrong. Think about someone in a car accident. They fall forward on impact, hitting their head on a steering wheel, which then forms a bruise. The whiplash can lead to neck pain and stiffness. Very similar for a child who falls forward and hits their head. Again, I ask, why wouldn't you have them checked?

Key Milestones to get your Child Checked at are:

* Birth
* Lifting head/Rolling over
* Sitting on own/Crawling
* Standing on own/Walking

It is also important to get them checked regularly once they start moving around. If they fall, or hit their head on anything, bring them in for a check. If they are showing any signs of:

* Colic
* Ear Infection/Cold
* Bed Wetting

One of the most important things I learned while in chiropractic school is that pain is the last symptom to show up when a problem is present. I wish I would have known this throughout elementary school when, after running around at recess, I noticed a bit of discomfort in my hips and knees. Growing pains right? Or maybe in high school while playing volleyball, I had low back pain. Just from being active right? Or what about in college, when I had severe headaches? Just eye strain from studying maybe?

No child, teen, or young adult should be uncomfortable. Pain and aches are not normal. Start early, get them checked regularly!
